Government Autonomous College, Angul is the premier Institution for higher education in the District of Angul. It was established in the year 1957 but started functioning from the academic session 1958-59. Establishment of the college was possible by the pioneering effort of the then Chief Minister Dr. H. K. Mahatab and Sri Kumuda Chandra Singh the then MLA of Hindol.

The College started as an I.Sc College and the name of the college has undergone changes time and again and finally assumed the name Govt. College, Angul in the year 1976. The college is affiliated to the Utkal University. The college became a lead college in the year 1990.

The ‘Autonomous’ status was conferred on the college by the University Grant Commission during the session 2006-07 and the College has been accredited by the NAAC. It imparts 20 under graduate and 20 post graduate programmes across Arts, Science & Commerce Stream.

The college, which is affiliated to Utkal University has been redesigning and restructuring its syllabus from time to time as per the guidelines of the UGC and it has incorporated seminar, project work, field study and continuous evaluation system into the curriculum. There is also a vibrant feedback mechanism in which there is effective evaluation of teachers by the students. This HEI has adopted NEP as per the instruction from Govt of Odisha from the academic year 2024-25. This HEI runs as per Institutional Developmental Plan (IDP), Policies, and Principles for academic, administrative, and financial development of the Institute.

Research is an integral part of any quality-conscious institution and the institute strongly believes in it. To encourage excellence in research, this HEI maintains a well-defined Research policy. The institute gives importance to all spheres of student life, be it academic or non-academic, to ensure holistic development. The students are motivated to participate in Youth services/ co-curricular activities like National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadets Corps (NCC), Rangers and Rovers, Youth Red Cross, Sports, Cultural events, etc. The students are also mentored through the mentor-mentee system.

The institute provides advanced IT and academic infrastructure for academic and research. The HEI is committed to promote national and international level collaborations in academic, research, and employability. The HEI encourages its faculty to actively participate in collaborations, and further provide effective impetus back to the students.
